YWCA Banff and The Harmony Project contracted Pen Pals Design Co. to create print and digital materials to compliment learning sessions for grades 7, 8, & 9's in the Bow Valley, facilitated through the Centre for Sexuality. These sessions addressed the key needs of this age demographic providing the necessary skills to form healthy relationships.
These sessions and materials provide an opportunity for the young community to develop new skills and build important capacity around the following outcomes: healthy relationships, consent, empathy, leadership, community resources, and self-care.
For this project, I chose to use bright, warm colours (yellow/orange/purple/cream) that would attract the audience, ages 12 to 15. These posters were distributed to classrooms throughout the Bow Valley following the delivery of the learning sessions.
Working with the client, we decided to include hand-drawn (then digitized) animals found in the Bow Valley. Using a variety of animals of different shapes and sizes, I was able to reflect the diversity of the students in the classrooms. It was important that every student that interacted with this poster could see themselves in the design.
I focused on an approachable design that was consistent across all of the materials. Although some of these topics may be considered heavy, the design helped lighten and invite students into the conversations.
